Day School: The Lunar Society plus The Brunels

The 18th century Lunar Society: who were its members and their importance in the development of science and technology? Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel - their contribution to 19th century engineering. Please note the Day School starts at 10am and will finish at 1pm.

Course aim

The start of the Industrial Revolution. What happened and who took part? The Lunar Society in Birmingham played its part. Nearer the end of the period, the Brunels made a huge contribution and we still benefit from their work and ideas.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name some members of the Lunar Society.
  • Outline some of the contributions made by some members.
  • Outline one experiment performed by a member of the Lunar Society.
  • Name one construction designed by Marc Brunel.
  • Name one construction designed by Isambard Brunel.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
