Medeival people worked hard but also knew how to celebrate. This course explores the ways in which medieval East Anglians marked important festive occasions and the activities they enjoyed at times of relaxation and entertainment.

Course aim

To explore the different styles of entertainment enjoyed in the Medieval period and to identify how they were associated with a variety of festivals.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define medieval festivals of both national and local importance.
  • Identify forms of entertainment associated with these festivals.
  • Analyse how festivals and entertainments in East anglia could be used for a variety of social reasons.
  • Evaluate the importance of festivity and entertainment to the medieval East Anglian community.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • The following books may be of interest: 'The English Year', Steve Roud 'The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain', Ronald Hutton "The English at Play in the Middle Ages', Teresa McLean

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • This course will, hopefully, lead to further exploration of medieval music, attendance at productions of medieval plays and an interest in medieval entertainments as a whole.
