From court wear to what a servant wore, this course examines women’s clothing of the 18th century. How it was worn, who made it and what it cost are discussed using information from contemporary sources and research on surviving garments in museum collections.

Discover women’s clothing of the 18th century. Based on contemporary sources, learn how it was worn, who made it and what it cost.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the styles of women’s clothing worn during the period.
  • Discuss how new styles spread around the country.
  • Recognise and explain how clothing was made and by whom.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
