Art & Culture in 17th Century Europe

Caravaggio, Rubens, Poussin, Van Dyck, Velazquez, Claude, Rembrandt, Vermeer are a handful of the artists covered in this decade by decade history of the culture and art of Europe. Innovations in painting, architecture and sculpture will be discussed alongside court culture, patronage, world trade, scientific developments and the rise of the academies. Each week we will also look at one work in great detail; getting to grips with the basic tools, concepts and questions of art history.

Course aim

To provide an overview of art and culture in 17th century Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse paintings in a visual context
  • Discuss the historical context of 17th century art
  • Explain how art historians discuss style and technique

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
