Brief outline of Russian history (1st session), then tutor's own experiences of life and travels in Russia from 1960s to present day: lives of ordinary - and some extraordinary (!) - people. Every session illustrated with tutor's slides plus music and realia. Students may get an enhanced understanding of Russia and the Russians from following the outline of Russian history and the tutor's personal stories of travels, adventures and encounters in today's Russia. Her time there as a nanny in the 60s, and particularly as a teacher in 1987 during Peretstroika have led to friendships that have given her a rare insight into the Russian world.

Course aim

Life in today's Russia while referring to past events that have shaped the present. 1st session to be a "gallop" through Russian history up to the end of WW2.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • It should appeal to anyone interested enough in the topic to come along.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify at least one aspect of Russian life or history of which I have a deeper working knowledge
  • recognise some of the forces that have shaped Russians' attitudes to life and authority
  • approach reports in the media about events in Russia from a more informed position

How will I be taught?

  • your own researches - books, internet etc. - into the topics arising from each session may add to your enjoyment of the course

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • suggestions: A good history of Russia/USSR "Nothing is True and Everything is Possible" by Peter Pomarantsev (2015) Balanced online news - TV channel "RT" - NB kremlin financed and controlled!

  • More reading from the suggested list or independently. The "Russian Season" exhibition at Sainsbury Centre (14/10/17 - 11/02/18). a visit to Russia perhaps?
