Twentieth and Twenty First Century Opera

The course looks at a selection of 20th and 21st century operas, It looks at works that are now standard in the repertory and also show the composers' development. We look at later Puccini (eg La Fanciulla del West), Richard Strauss (Salome and Die Frau ohne Schatten), Debussy (Pelleas and Melisande), Berg (Wozzeck), Britten (Peter Grimes), Janacek (Katya Kabanova), Shostakovitch and the role of the State as censor (Lady Macbeth), Stravinsky (The Rake's Progress) and Ades and Turnage and the 21st century.

Course aim

To encourage an interest in 20th and 21st century opera.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Also perhaps for the adventurous opera goer.and for those who need to be reassured that there's nothing to frighten the horses

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • A wide(r) knowledge of modern opera
  • Have overcome the view that no decent opera has been written after Turandot
  • To be able to hold my own in interval discussions
  • Have a desire to seek out these operas
  • To follow the development of opera from its late sixteenth centuty beginings to the 21st century

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • A wide use of DVDs

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
