Practical Art: Drawing

Students will be able to improve skills and confidence in their drawing. They will be able to explore and experiment with using pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, biros, felt tip pens, coloured pencils and pastels Course content and topics will include • Contour (line) drawing and tonal value drawing – different grades of pencil and charcoal • Different effects from each of the drawing media - realistic or expressive • One point perspective • Importance of picture composition - positive and negative space

Course aim

A practical drawing course for students to learn, explore and develop their individual creativity through mark making using a variety of drawing media and techniques

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least 2 drawing materials and techniques
  • Demonstrate at least 2 drawing techniques
  • Produce one or more drawings in a chosen drawing medium
  • Use a sketchbook to record exploration of ideas
  • Reflect and discuss art work produced either verbal or written

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
