'Imperial Destiny' examines the factors that created the British Empire, the elements and efforts that sustained it, the circumstances of its decline and marks that it has left on the world today.

Course aim

More than one third of the states that comprise the UN have, at some time, been part of the British Empire.This course examines how a small island off the North Western edge of Europe became the principal power in a world dominated by Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify three key factors in the success of Britain in the creatiob of an Empire
  • Understand the particular problems inherent in a sea power based Empire.
  • Give three reasons for the demise of the British Empire

How will I be taught?

  • Primarily by lectures and group discussion supported by some individual reading.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
