We will consider the criticism made in the 19th century of British musicians and the tastes of British people by German observers with a view to establishing, through evidence, that we had a thriving if local music scene which stretches forward from the time of Handel's visit to England to the First World War. England is actually a magnet to continental musicians - with its professional concert giving, recognition of the profession of composer and perfromer and excellent music education system

Course aim

in the face of German criticism that we had a 'land without music' we will discover the wealth of English music in the 19th and early twentieth century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the composers who created an English style of composition and performance
  • demonstrate using the many examples available, that England, while an island, had exciting programmes of music performance
  • Evaluate documentation that will prove this activity in English life, such as the record of programs of music education
  • recognise using 21st century criteria, the vitality of English concert programming
  • weigh up the impact of English music in the 19th century by the time the course is completed

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
