Post Modernist Detective Fiction

How and why has detective fiction changed since the golden age of Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie? This course aims to employ new critical terminology to help us consider the narrative styles of three unique postmodernist texts drawing on very different elements of detective fiction.

Course aim

This course will address how postmodernist narrative trends have affected the legacy and tradition of detective fiction by introducing to students new reading skills, critical terminology, and literary theory.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a keen familiarity with the narrative styles of postmodernist detective fiction
  • Describe the key similarities and differences between the novels
  • Identify thematic and narrative trends in the texts independently
  • Use the critical terminology introduced throughout the course confidently in conversation
  • Develop confidence to contribute their own opinions and debate within the class

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to complete the required reading list in your own time.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
