Heart over Head – The Romantic Muse and Musical Taste

Ref: C2224408

People always have a personal view of the so called romantic composers which provokes an often heated discussion over the validity of this music alongside that which is constructed on the traditional classical principles of form, key relationship and thematic contrast. The course considers the use of classical form by these composers and the vehicle for their emotional outbursts, and their creation of new templates for what we now call 'programme' music, and above all, the association of the Early Romantics with the nationalist movements.

Course aim

This is a study of the enthusiasm of the 19th century public for 'descriptive' music over 'intellectually demanding music
