Outposts of Byzantium

This fascinating course explores both the distinctive and common elements of Byzantine culture at seven of the most significant of its outposts beyond the specialised world of Constantinople. Beginning with the ancient and distinctive monastic community of Sinai, and continuing with Ravenna, Trebizond, Meteora, Mistra, Monemvasia, and Mount Athos, we discuss how each centre worked with and preserved vital aspects of Byzantine life, culture, and artistic expression.

Course aim

This course introduces Byzantine culture at seven outposts beyond Constantinople. Beginning with Sinai, we discuss how each one contributed or preserved important aspects of Byzantine life and expression.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain what is most distinctive about Byzantine art.
  • Describe the ways in which Byzantine outposts adapted to their specific localities.
  • Identify the most important elements of Byzantine mosaic art.
  • Discuss the part that Mistra played in the late Byzantine history of Greece.
  • Explain why Byzantine culture did not die out in 1453.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Each session involves the tutor presenting a talk illustrated with slides. There is ample opportunity for questions and discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • A notebook and pen or tablet computer would be helpful for notetaking.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
