900 Years of British Agriculture

Our present landscape is the product of human activity in the past. The changes in farming over the period 1066-1945 has left its imprint on the countryside and the people who live there. We will trace technological development, the contribution of significant individuals and changes caused by population growth and the demands of two World Wars.

Course aim

To introduce the way in which agriculture has developed over time and the impact which this has left on people and the landscape .

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Assess the changes over a 900 year span
  • 2 Identify the technological developments and comment on their importance
  • 3 Evaluate the social impact of agricultural change
  • 4 Recognise historical features of agriculture in the countryside
  • 5 Comment on the relationships between farmers and labourers

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • Nothing else is needed

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
