This course is suitable for those considering starting their own business, whether home based or on a larger scale. It will provide information about the mandatory requirements of setting up a company and explain about the different types of companies. Participants will learn the key elements of writing a business plan, doing market research and identifying a unique product line. They will be able to create a budget for the initial start up, prepare a marketing strategy and outline how they will create revenue.

Course aim

Participants will learn about the key aspects in setting up a business including the mandatory requirements and everything from creating a business plan to sales and marketing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the mandatory requirements of running a business and different types of companies
  • Identify a market research strategy and a unique product line for your business
  • Appreciate the key elements of writing a business plan
  • Prepare a marketing strategy for your business
  • Create a timeline for your business with objections and actions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
