Achieving Vibrancy and Depth in Watercolour

To build confidence in students, using a range of varied subjects, planned to incorporate a wide range of techniques and methods that can be experimented with throughout each project. Useful tips and advice along with a step by step procedure will allow students to improve on colour mixing, washes and brush control. Individual attention, group demonstration and discussion will all help to make this course an informative, enjoyable experience for those looking to improve on their technique in both drawing and painting areas.

Course aim

To give students more confidence to plan their own drawings and paintings using their own subject matter and ideas and to experiment more freely with their technique.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compose a drawing that is well balanced and pleasing to the eye.
  • Have more control over wet and variegated washes.
  • Be able to make use of counterchange to give tonal contrast.
  • Have some knowledge of using special effects by using clingfilm, salt or candle wax.
  • Draw an accurate figure that is anatomically correct.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students may want to gather additional subject material or reference material if they wish.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • 2B pencil, eraser and rule. Watercolour paints, brushes and palette. Watercolour paper and water container.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
