Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers - The Art of Beautiful Writing

An opportunity to be introduced to the style of Italic Calligraphy. The course will cover a brief history of Italic hand. Demonstrations throughout the sessions, and a selection of exercises to link with the lettering. We will examine and apply the stroke sequences for each lowercase and capital letter. These techniques will be applied to produce a finished piece of calligraphy.

Course aim

To offer an introduction to the characteristics of Italic Calligraphy including tools and materials, which is a great style to learn for the beginner. With a view to developing your own hand lettering.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain knowledge of the history of the Italic Hand
  • Select appropriate tools and materials for writing Italic
  • Construct lower case letterforms in Italic
  • Construct upper case letterforms in Italic
  • Identify the principles and produce balanced layouts

How will I be taught?

  • I will monitor and assess students letter forms through a combination of exercises, activities and projects with worksheets and games to engage with.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Comfortable clothing and a good pair of glasses (if needed). We will be sat down for the most part of the course. Reference books and work sheets will be provided. Tools and materials will be available to buy if needed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
