We will look at how rocks and minerals are used in everyday life . Where they are found and are extracted and how this can have an impact on our landscapes. The class will at the beautiful minerals of great value, the important and useful. " The good the bad and the ugly" The class will look at where we find them in this country and around the world There will be able to see samples of the mineral and rocks in a class setting and photographs of the ones we cannot bring to the class

Course aim

This course will look at how geology rocks and minerals are used in our lives and how their extraction can effect our landscapes

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Be able to know where everyday products come from and are produced
  • Know where rocks and minerals are found and how they are formed
  • Understand the impact on the landscape of extracting rocks and minerals
  • Know the wide range of uses of rocks in buildings
  • Understand the value of rocks and mineral to our economy

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Student will be able to draw on their knowledge of uses of rocks and minerals

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Students are welcome to make notes, bring in samples, photographs and take part in the discussions

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
