You will learn different the effects of Applique using many different fabrics, both by hand and by sewing machine items to be made up into Bags, Cushions and other items for use in the home.

Course aim

This course is about Applique and during the course we will be trying different methods of applying fabric to fabric, by hand and using the sewing machine

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • a certain manual dexterity is needed to perform some of the techniques used.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • How to transfer designs on to fabric.
  • How to use a material called Bondaweb
  • hand methods of needle turning
  • using the sewing machine different stitches
  • Make up techniques and finishing.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • You will be asked to keep an A4 folder with your patterns and templates

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It is hoped that you will bring in your own materials from which to work.
