This course will develop you skills and interest in up-cycling, customising and altering clothes. We will learn lots of different techniques to rejuvenate clothes. Bring along old clothes and your imagination!

Course aim

The main purpose of the course is to teach students how to customise, up-cycle, re-style and alter clothes to fit. To encourage less waste and collaboration between students.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • Students need to have made 1 or 2 garments before and have an interest in sewing.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1 Understand how to alter various different garments made from different fabrics to fit including using fabric manipulation techniques to alter the fit of clothes
  • 2 Demonstrate how to create advanced embellishment techniques to garments to customise, re-style and rejuvenate old clothes
  • 3 Demonstrate how to make more advanced repairs to garments for re-use
  • 4 Demonstrate how to combine garments in a creative way to upcycle old clothing and accessories
  • 5 Demonstrate various methods to print, resist with batik, shibori dye and cold water dye to rejuvenate old clothes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Between classes you may be asked to source different items for each week's different activity.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Different activities will be set each week for students to participate in. These activities may take 1 hour or the whole day therefore students are also welcome to have a number of their own projects to work on over the weeks of the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a sewing kit of scissors, pins, tape measure, chalk, sewing threads, needles & a quick unpick. Sewing machines, overlockers, irons, ironing boards and tailors dummies are provided. Also clothes or charity shop finds to experiment with!

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
