In many ways the twentieth century was the century of psychology as the subject acquiring an importance in understanding matters of mental health, social management, education and personal development. Yet psychology has been part of our understanding since at least the time of the Greeks. This course will introduce students to the important developments in psychology, right up to the present interest of scientists in understanding the brain.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the history of psychology from classical times through to the present.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the principles and evidence for six different approaches to psychology through the ages. (behaviourism, psychoanalysis, cognitive science, biological explanations for the mind, folk psychology, humanism)
  • Use with confidence, following each session, some key vocabulary associated with each approach.
  • Describe the problems involved in studying the mind.
  • Evaluate whether psychology is a ‘real’ science
  • Discuss with fellow students some key issues arising from the course

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
