This course if for non- native speakers of English who have no knowledge of or a very limited ability in the language. The course is particularly suited to those looking for work and in receipt of benefits.

Course aim

This course provides English language tuition for speakers of other languages.

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at students who have little or no spoken English.

What topics will this course cover

Language will be taught within the context of jobs and skills, giving personal information and completing information on forms,

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Answer 5 question about me Name 3 jobs I can do Recognise names and jobs in a job advert Spell my name and address Read the time and location of an appointment

How will I know I'm making progress?

An initial assessment is carried out to establish learners starting points, followed by a diagnostic assessment to determine individual learning goals. Goals are recorded in ILPs Once the course is underway the tutor will correct students written and spoken language. Learners progress will be recorded in their ILPs as the course progresses.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A4 ring binder, A4 paper, pens.

Reading and information sources

not required.

What could the course lead to?

The course will help learners to progress to E1 level ESOL courses.
