Course aim

This Beginners Workshop provides a practical introduction to Makaton. The course is delivered over 4 modules with lots of time for practice and building confidence to use Makaton, where you will learn over 200 signs and symbols of the core vocabulary, and how to use Makaton at home or at work.

The Makaton Beginners Workshop is for parents, carers and workers who need to use Makaton in everyday situations.

What topics will this course cover

The Makaton Beginners Workshop will cover the Makaton Core Vocabulary of stages 1 - 4 plus Additional Vocabulary.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

At the end of the workshop participants should have the confidence and skills to begin to use Makaton more fluently in their daily interactions with children and adults. A certificate of attendance will be achieved on completion of the workshop, giving you access to further courses.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will have opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of using Makaton in a practical manner as well as discuss lecture information in small groups. Feedback will be given to the group as a whole, in small groups and individually throughout the course.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A course booklet containing a wealth of information about Makaton, including the signs and symbols that you will learn on the workshop, is provided. Students will need to purchase this at a cost of £32.

What could the course lead to?

After attending The Beginners Workshop students will be given information on how to progress to further Makaton Workshops to learn the Core Vocabulary stages 5 - 8 plus Additional Vocabulary on the Follow Up Workshop.
