This introductory course covers general administrative support and interpersonal communication. Students learn to work as part of a team and adapt to a changing office environment. Some basic administrative assistant tasks are introduced, including completing correspondence, answering phones and receiving visitors.

Course aim

This unaccredited introductory course is for people who have never worked in an office environment and would like to familiarise themselves with administration & receptionist work and improve their confidence.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1.Identify hazards and security risks in a workplace 2.Use correct language, grammar and tone to respond to correspondence 3.Write a personal statement and a letter of application 4.List the standard procedures for dealing with visitors and phone calls 5.Describe professional behaviour in an office environment

How will I know I'm making progress?

• Throughout the course you will complete some oral and written tasks either individually or in groups, with the tutor giving verbal feedback. • There will be regular homework assignments to show to the tutor for written feedback. • You will complete an individual learning plan to which the tutor will add her comments.

What could the course lead to?

This course will help you develop some basic administration & receptionist skills and increase your confidence in getting a job. Students can progress to accredited higher level Office Administration courses.
