What do we mean when we say "vulnerable adult". Who in our community is vulnerable, who is responsible for them and how can we keep them safe from harm?

Course aim

The course aims to develop understanding of the term "Vulnerable adult" and voluntary and community organisations responsibilities.

What topics will this course cover

We will learn the meaning of the term "vulnerable adult" and discuss how we can recognise, minimise and prevent abuse.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Understand what is meant by the term "vulnerable adult" 2. Understand what is meant by abuse 3. Understand how to minimise abuse

Reading and information sources

No essential or desirable preparation needed but please feel free to research any of the terms in this course information sheet and read about stories in the news regarding "vulnerable adults" on-line or in newspapers or magazines. Please feel free to bring any articles you think are relevant to the first session.

What could the course lead to?

This unit "Introduction to working with vulnerable adults" can lead to additional units which go towards an award in employability skills.
