Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition. You will need to provide evidence of your benefit status at the first session.

Course aim

Patchwork and Quilting Piece a patchwork block, Quilt it and turn it into a cushion cover. Pattern supplied

Who is the course for?

Students may quilt by hand or bring their own machine if they prefer. Machines should be PAT tested. Beginners or anyone wanting to refresh their knowledge.

What topics will this course cover

Discuss pattern and fabrics - tones/colours/placement Cut fabric Piecing by hand or machine Quilting by hand or machine Layering patchwork, batting and backing Cushion construction (envelope)

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Cut and piece a patchwork block Basic quilting techniques Layering and knowledge of different types of batting/wadding

How will I know I'm making progress?

During every session students will have the opportunity to have one-to-one time with the tutor to discuss anything they're finding challenging. Feedback is immediate.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Any scrap fabric you have. Swapping scraps is encouraged, for variety in your designs. Pattern will be supplied but please bring thread, needle, fabric marking pens/chalk, pins etc. If you are using a machine, bring your machine and all it's accessories.
