Exercise: Seated Yoga (Reaching Out)

Yoga improves co-ordination, strength and flexibility by moving every part of the body. It helps us move and breathe better, concentrate and relax. Classes are varied and fun. Students sit on chairs, with the option of standing sometimes.

Additional information about this course

Booking via the Chichester branch is essential. Half term: TBC but there will be a 2 week break between start and end date due to Bank holidays. No class on May 1st, 22nd and 29th

Course aim

To improve body awareness, strength and flexibility. To breathe more deeply and to increase self-confidence and ability to concentrate and to relax.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

Warming up through gentle stretches, backward and forward bends, twists, balances, breathing and guided relaxation. Singing often used with the movements.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1 Demonstrate and practice a range of stretches and postures according to individual ability; 2 Take part in breathing exercises and breathe a little better; 3 Sit quietly for approx 3 minutes - quiet time; 4 Sit or lie quietly and relax for 15 minutes.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Through verbal and physical feedback during the class and at the end, one to one, as necessary, and through discussion and feedback with the helpers in the class and key workers.
