Tell Your Story

This short course will look at developing your creative writing skills using your own stories/experiences. Using techniques such as free-flow writing to to start with, the aim is to choose an experience from your past which will be developed over the 3 weeks into a short story. Throughout, you will share your writing to the group and have the opportunity to give and receive feedback, all the while being supported by Amy the course leader. Amy Charles has a BA Hons degree in English Literature and Creative Writing, is an avid poet and has had some of her work published in local magazines. She co-runs Fly Girl Films, a West Yorkshire film production company and is also a writer and director for Wakefield based theatre company Cuckoo's Egg Collective.

To provide an outlet for creative expression and to improve the students writing skills.

What topics will this course cover

The course will look at various creative writing techniques and offer the opportunity to give and receive constructive feedback

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Demonstrate understanding of non-fiction writing and the various technical skills that help develop them. Give and receive constructive criticism. Demonstrate confidence in being creative and sharing ideas. Think creatively and produce work within a given amount of time.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Feedback will be given every week in groups and from the tutor

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A blank writing book specifically for this course would be useful but not necessary
