Holiday Spanish

Ref: C3671586

‘A short introduction to basic Spanish for beginners, from greetings and introductions to shopping for food and ordering a drink or a snack in a Spanish bar. Whether you’re planning a holiday or a trip to visit friends and relatives or if you’re simply interested in trying out a few words in Spanish, this course will give you a taste of the language and culture of Spain.’

Course aim

To enable learners to speak, write and understand some basic Spanish for everyday purposes and to provide an introduction to Spanish culture.

Who is the course for?

No prior knowledge or experience is required or expected.

What topics will this course cover

We will begin by looking at some basic greetings and learn how to introduce ourselves in Spanish. We will look at the pronunciation of Spanish letters and words. We will learn some numbers, talk about where we are from and then learn the names of some drinks and snacks, as well as some of the language around ordering and paying in Spanish bars and cafes. If time allows, we will learn how to ask for some basic items of food in a Spanish shop or market.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1.To say hello and goodbye in Spanish according to time of day. 2.To be able to introduce themselves. 3.To say where they are from and where they live. 4.To order a drink and a snack in a bar.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Learners will be offered homework which I will use to feedback on progress. Each lesson will begin with a recap of the previous week's themes and there will be regular opportunities for learners to ask questions about the language and to clarify any points or misunderstandings.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

All course materials will be provided. We will be mostly using the BBC Talk Spanish 1 course book. Learners are not expected to have a copy but are free to buy one should they wish.

Reading and information sources

I will talk to learners at the first session about useful reading and online material they could access to supplement their learning.

What could the course lead to?

Learners could join a beginners Spanish group if they would like to study the language further.
