This course is suitable for beginners and is aimed at persons experiencing mental health challenges. We will cover a range of mindfulness and meditation methods, relaxation and visualisation techniques and models from a range of international and cultural sources.

Sessions as follows- NOTE : Different session times Session 1- 12.30 to 4.00 -3.5 hours Sessions 2&3 -10.00 to 4.00 (break for lunch) 5 hours This course will cover a range of mindfulness, meditation, relaxation and visualisation techniques.

Course aim

To provide students with the skills and knowledge of a range of mindfulness and meditation-based models and techniques from a variety of cultural sources. To encourage learners to apply these models and techniques in their daily lives, for the improvement of health and overall well-being.

Who is the course for?

No previous knowledge or experience required. All course content is presented at an introductory level.

What topics will this course cover

MINDFULNESS - INTRODUCTION GROUNDING & CENTERING EXERCISES MINDFULNESS TECHNIQUES AFFIRMATIONS POSITIVE VISUALISATION TECHNIQUES SINGLE-POINTED & GUIDED MEDITATION THE ENERGY BREATHING METHOD MAJOR CHAKRAS OF THE HUMAN BODY STANDING & MOVEMENT MEDITATION BREATHING & SOUND VIBRATION CHANTING

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Identify a range of mindfulness and meditation techniques and models, and have a basic understanding of their origins, uses and practice. Experience some personal benefits by experiencing, practicing and using some mindfulness and meditation techniques and models at this workshop. Participate more confidently in group learning, sharing and relaxation activities. Utilise some mindfulness and meditation techniques and models into daily practice for the improvement of general health and well-being

How will I know I'm making progress?

Feedback from students will be encouraged after each specific technique has been explained, demonstrated and practiced. Learners will be encouraged to practice certain techniques between sessions and report any findings, progress and achievements at the weekly “Talking Stick” feedback sessions.

None required

Reading and information sources

All handouts and necessary reading materials will be provided.

What could the course lead to?

Students are encouraged to utilise the skills gained in their daily lives for their on-going health and well-being. References will be supplied for further reading and research. Students should be able to immediately utilise the techniques learned during this course. Meditation CD's will be available at the second session.
