Fused Glass for Beginners

Learners will be able to make decorative items in glass like coasters, wall hangings and bowls. Glass is cut and decorated with coloured glass powders and the work is then fused in a kiln. The work is then put in a mould and heated to produce curved forms like bowls.

Course aim

A basic introduction to Fused Glass techniques and design skills with a view to making decorative items.

Who is the course for?

No previous experience needed. Beginners welcomed.

What topics will this course cover

Cutting and shaping glass Applying coloured glass to create patterns and textures Basic knowledge of fusing glass in a kiln Preparing and using moulds for shaping glass in the kiln Using designs to explore colour and form in glass

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Cutting and shaping Glass Applying frits and Confetti Basic knowledge of fusing Preparing and using moulds for slumping Health and Safety when working with Glass

How will I know I'm making progress?

Students will be given verbal feedback on skills and techniques. Students will be expected to demonstrate design skills by keeping a creative journal/sketch book.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Note/sketch book. Sharpie or permanent marker. Pencils for drawing. Small bottle of PVA glue. Tea towel for cleaning glass. Safety glasses. A small voluntary contribution for glass materials.

Reading and information sources

There is a small selection of books with glass projects. A list of websites of interest will be provided.

What could the course lead to?

Students will be provided with information and advise to set up their own practice. Students will be provide with information on progression opportunities.
