The course is aimed at all abilities. You will learn all the basics of earthenware pottery hand-building techniques using terracotta clay. Come and join like minded people in bashing a lump of clay into something more interesting, that will last forever!

Course aim

This 10 week course will teach you the basics of earthenware hand built pottery techniques using terracotta clay. At first you will follow one or two structured projects then you will be set free with your imagination and clay.

What topics will this course cover

All the main aspects of hand-building techniques with earthenware terracotta clay.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Understand experience and put into practice at least two of the different making/decorating methods of pottery, i.e.; Coiling/Slip Decoration or Press Moulding/Stamping. Build upon existing skills in order to evaluate areas for further development creatively and technically within your work, from finishing techniques to decoration. Explore the form, colour, texture and surface pattern in more depth in two pieces of your work. Use the correct terms and vocabulary to describe how you made your work. Adhere at all times to Health & Safety requirements. Ensure you use safe working methods with the materials you are using.

How will I know I'm making progress?

1:1 Tuition and continual assessment.

Please bring an apron!
