Painting and Drawing for Beginners

This friendly and relaxed class will provide the opportunity for you to develop your painting and drawing skills as well as your knowledge and appreciation of art. This course is designed for all levels and abilities with individual guidance from the tutor to develop your own interests and projects.

Course aim

To develop painting and drawing skills and confidence, in a friendly and supportive environment, whilst extending knowledge and appreciation of art.

Who is the course for?

All welcome, especially for those who have no experience or are looking to refresh their skills

What topics will this course cover

The course will be practically based which will include a variety of subject areas according to the interests of the group. We will explore drawing and painting techniques using a range of media. Students will have the opportunity to observe practical demonstrations before embarking on individual pieces using the techniques. There will be one-to-one tutorial support from the tutor as well as the chance to engage in peer discussion regarding the progress and results of artistic works.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Use colour to create a piece of work Observe and demonstrate tonal value in a drawing Create a drawing from observation List basic principles of composition Recognise techniques in a drawing/painting of an artists work

How will I know I'm making progress?

Feedback will be given each session from the tutor individually along with group discussion and feedback. You will complete a Student Learning Record of your progress and achievement. The tutor will provide written feedback on your progress as part of a mid-course progress review and at the end of the course. You will be encouraged to reflect on what you have learnt and to identify your strengths and further areas to learn. You are encouraged to keep a portfolio of your work with notes of learning.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

2b pencil (or various grades of pencil/graphite), charcoal and a sketchbook A4 or A3 or A2. Pencil sharpener, rubber and media that you want to use on the course. Advice will be given about materials during course.

Reading and information sources

Students will require some of their own visual resources which will be discussed on the course. We will use various art journals and magazines including International Artist, The Artist, Artists and Illustrators. Some books and web-sites where appropiate

What could the course lead to?

Information on local societies and groups will be shared during the course as well as useful web-sites and further reading. Encouragement to further develop and continue your work out of class. The tutor can provide you with information about what you can do next with the WEA and other local providers.
