Learn how to decorate your own cupcakes with flowers and butterflies. Make your own sugarcraft decorations to enhance a celebration cake for that professional finish. Learn a variety of techniques in a fun and friendly atmosphere.
Course aim
To teach learners how to use different mediums to cover and produce decorations for cakes or cupcakes using cutters and formers to make flowers, foliage and decorations. Use of colour and how to mix and dust various shades.
Who is the course for?
The course is suitable for both beginners and people with some prior experience. All topics covered are new and all techniques are demonstrated. N.B. There may be additional costs for tools and materials.
What topics will this course cover
How to make lace tops for cupcakes and decorate with cutters, moulds and piped decorations How to make a cake top decoration or plaque with fan design. How to make flower petals and leaves into realistic shapes with a summer theme. How to use paste and powder colours.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
Produce decorations suitable for cakes or cupcakes using cutters and formers Make a plaque or cake top decoration Use paste and powder colours Produce flowers and foliage from sugarpaste or flowerpaste Have some knowledge of the history of sugarcraft
How will I know I'm making progress?
Learners will be given verbal feedback during practical activities and when each task is completed. This is to check understanding and that learning is taking place.
What else do I need to know, do or bring?
Icing sugar, corn flour, flower paste, sugar paste, cake, leaf and flower cutters, rolling pin, board. Storage boxes, apron. Discussed at first session.
Reading and information sources
Learners are given names of writers of professional sugar craft publications as these may be of use to show what can be achieved and for ideas.
What could the course lead to?
Learners are encouraged to make cakes for friends and family to practice their new skills. A further course to improve on techniques learnt and to learn new skills is desirable.
