Course is aimed at women of all ages, size, shape, backgrounds and abilities to attain physical and mental health. Yoga keeps joints supple, promotes relaxation and helps with emotional calming during times of hormonal shift. It helps to quiet an active mind and may help to restore a good sleep pattern.

Course aim

The course aims to focus on women's health by practicing yoga to prevent or reduce the severity of many ailments that specifically affect women. Yoga has been shown to regulate menstrual disorders and the side effects of menopause

What topics will this course cover

Simple Meditation using mindfullness with breath, sound, imagery, physical sensations to anchor the mind to stay focused on the PRESENT Preparatory limbering postures to prepare body to work towards taking the joints to their full range of motion. Basic yoga postures to restore women's health Simple restorative postures to aid women in all phases of her menstrual cycle Breathing techniques (Pranayama)

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Be able to set up a yoga asana home practice with the techniques learnt in class to help relieve the discomfort associated with menstruation and symptoms of menopause. Use of aids and props to deepen the pose relevant to their own needs. Be able to set up simple restorative postures to relax and renew Work towards strength building by holding poses longer Use of various breathing techniques to lower stress levels, Blood pressure and boost immune system amongst various other several health benefits

How will I know I'm making progress?

Verbal and visual feedback while in the pose to correct mis- alignment and cause of discomfort. Learning the use of various yoga props and equipments to adapt the pose to ease discomfort and relieve pain.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

All equipment and props are available to use at the Yoga Sanctuary. But if you wish to bring your own mat, towel, you are welcome to do so. Please read the beginners handout, and frequently asked questions on the website www.yogasanctuary.org. Please wear something loose and comfortable that allows you freedom of movement. Most students prefer leggings and tops. Yoga is generally done in bare feet but bring socks to wear especially during the relaxation.
