The course will cover basic principles of yoga through practice of posture work, breath work and relaxation. Yoga can help with physical strength, flexibility and mobility as well as reducing stress and discomfort and aiding feelings of relaxation.
To provide a basic introduction to the practice of yoga which is enjoyable, safe and beneficial to students of all levels and abilities.
Who is the course for?
This course is suitable for students of all levels and abilities, for those with no previous experience of yoga, for those who may wish to return to basic principles or for those who may wish to choose a gentler practice.
What topics will this course cover
The course will use a good foundation, through the contact of the body with the ground, bringing greater length and balance to the spine to explore the possibilities of greater ease and freedom of the breath. Different breathing techniques will be practised to enhance awareness of the breath. The breath will be used as a tool for greater awareness of the body.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
Feel the benefits of a regular, on-going yoga practice to their overall feelings of well-being. Have an increased awareness and knowledge of the breath and respiratory system. Work comfortably with a breathing practice. Use the breath to release stress and muscular tension. Use what they have learnt during the course in everyday situations.
How will I know I'm making progress?
Students are visually observed by the tutor who will encourage modifications and adjustments where appropriate but primarily they will be guided towards developing self awareness and observing their own feelings of progress through sensations in the body and their breath rather than through outer appearances.
What else do I need to know, do or bring?
The tutor will provide mats, blocks and blankets, though students may wish to bring their own. Warm, comfortable clothing is all that is required.
Reading and information sources
No reading or preparation is necessary prior to the course though reading materials may be recommended during the course.
What could the course lead to?
Students generally feel that they wish to continue their yoga practice after the course and carry on attending, either the same course or the Continuing Yoga course. They may also wish to attend a meditation or mindfulness class. Yoga has a wide range of benefits from physical improvements such as increased strength and stamina to mental benefits such as increased clarity and concentration, as well as greater confidence and reduced stress levels. These help students face challenges and progress in any chosen area of study or learning.
