The course will cover many creative writing genres from poetry to prose, from long and short fiction to journalism and member writing. There will be sessions on editing, performing and getting your work published.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to creative writing in different genres for new and returning students of any ability. To consolidate and build on existing writing skills.

Who is the course for?


What topics will this course cover

The course will encourage students to develop their writing skills in different genres with tutor input, student research and work away from the sessions. Students will be encouraged to develop their own writing project but also to try writing outside their comfort zone.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Recognise the genre in which you feel most comfortable Demonstrate the knowledge of at least 3 different writing genres and how they work Share their work confidently in pairs and to the whole group Demonstrate the ability to give and receive constructive criticism

How will I know I'm making progress?

Peer assessment every week, tutor feedback by request and in the sessions

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

The tutor will encourage the students to read in their chosen[and other related genres], to read reviews and share information about competitions and publishing opportunities. The group has its own supportive FB page.

All reading is essential to make a good writer

What could the course lead to?

The course has led to competition and publication success. Some students have moved onto college/university course as a result of coming to the sessions!
