Exploring Art Galleries

This course will consist of a series of visits to local and regional Art Galleries (transport not provided) to explore a combination of temporary exhibitions and aspects of permanent displays. Location and travel guidance will be provided at the introductory session.

Course aim

To explore a range of temporary exhibitions and aspects of permanent collections in local/regional Art Galleries. Analysing and understanding the background context of the artists and paintings.

What topics will this course cover

A full list of gallery locations to be visited will be presented at the first session - will be planned around temporary exhibitions and aspects of permanent displays in galleries.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Appreciate and analyse a wide range of paintings by different artists. Understand the background context to the paintings studied in the galleries. Contribute to constructive discussion about the paintings and artists. Make comparisons and contrasts between works seen in different displays. Realise the significance of the works/artists/themes highlighted in displays and exhibitions visited.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A notebook and pen may of use to make notes of particular paintings of interest for later discussion.

Reading and information sources

A list of useful background reading will be provided during the course.
