This course is part of the First Steps to Volunteering Programme: a collaboration with Volunteer Plymouth. Before enrolling you need to contact Volunteer Plymouth on 01752-241070 or volply@plymouthguild.org.uk for initial information and advice. The course is free to all adults over 19.

Course aim

This course, part of The First Steps to Volunteering programme, aims to provide you with an overview of the benefits of volunteering, while exploring the basic skills needed to succeed. For those not already volunteering, this can then be applied to researching, selecting and securing your own volunteering opportunity. For those already volunteering, this course will develop and enhance your skills and understanding of volunteering.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

This course will give an overview to what volunteering is all about and the benefits it can bring to individuals and to the wider community. You will be given an insight into what to expect when volunteering, while offering strategies which will help overcome any barriers which may stop you achieving your ambitions. We will explore and develop the skills needed to get the most out of the experience and help you decide on the best organisation to volunteer with. You will have the opportunity to research a range of organisations that offer volunteering opportunities and learn of the support available to match the right opportunity with your own needs. Help will be given for the whole process - from deciding on the right placement, to applying too individual organisation to advice and support while volunteering.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. demonstrate a range of the benefits of volunteering 2. identify the key skills needed to succeed in volunteering. 3. match their skills to volunteering opportunities 4. make an informed choice when applying for volunteering opportunities. 5. confidently access the support available through the First Steps to Volunteering programme

How will I know I'm making progress?

There will be times throughout the course where we will reflect on our knowledge and understanding; through group discussion, individual time, time with the tutor, and through reflection in course booklet.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A willingness to learn.

A well matched volunteering position which could give you skills, experiences, confidence, structure, organisational skills, that could lead to an improved sense of well-being , improved health or engagement with your local community and if needed, progression to employment.
