Pattern Making and Sewing

On this course you will learn the first steps to independently create your own dressmaking or craft items, such as cushions, purses, skirts and children's dresses. The tutor will aim to create a supportive community environment where everyone is equal and can learn at their own pace.

Course aim

The main aim for this course is to give the student their first foundation for independently making patterns and both hand and machine sewing.

Who is the course for?

No experience necessary.

What topics will this course cover

On this course we will cover how to design your own pattern, cut out fabrics and sew items together. You will be able to hand sew items as well as use a shared machine in order to achieve your aims.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Make a simple craft pattern 2. Sew a simple craft item 3. Make a simple dress making pattern 4. Start to sew a simple garment 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the process from pattern to finished product

How will I know I'm making progress?

Guidance, feedback and step by step support will be given throughout the course.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

You need to bring a small sewing and pattern cutting kit with the following items: fabric and paper scissors, needle and thread, tape measure, pins, ruler or pattern master, notebook and pencil. You will need fabric and pattern paper on this course which can either be brought along or purchased from the tutor on an as needed basis.

What could the course lead to?

This course is your first stepping stone to making patterns and sewing and could lead to more advanced courses or independent making at home.
