This course at Barton Hill Settlement will help you develop further computer skills at home or at work. You will gain confidence in skills such as word processing, using the internet effectively, spread sheets and email

Course aim

To give students confidence in using computers for everyday tasks and to practice their skills with Functional Skills papers, taking an optional exam to gain a qualification.

Who is the course for?

Ability to use the keyboard and mouse required, knowledge to search the internet for basic facts, understanding of saving work you have created.

What topics will this course cover

The course content will broadly follow the syllabus for IT functional skills encompassing word-processing and using images in a document, writing and replying to emails and using attachments. Basic spreadsheets are also covered and managing the files you have created.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1) Use a word processor to combine information from different sources to create a document such as a poster 2) Use a spreadsheet to create basic calculations according to a given requirement 3) Create folders and save your work into specific folders 4) Create and reply to emails in a simulated work environment 5) Open and act on an attachment and email your work as an attachment

How will I know I'm making progress?

The tutor will give individual verbal feedback on each activity and provide consolidation or extension material as required. Learners will use an individual learning plan to record and review their progress. Sample functional skills assessment will be given and marked using the marking scheme to assess progress.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

No background reading required, just enthusiasm and a notebook!
