The course will cover listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar. The class will include pair, group and individual work and will include a variety of topics to help students in their everyday lives and improve their ability to function independently in the UK. Students will be expected to come to every session, bring pens and paper, and do regular homework.

Course aim

This course is designed to help people begin to develop their English language.

Who is the course for?

You will need an initial assessment to join the course. This is important to find the right class for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call (0117)9166500 email or come in and see us.

What topics will this course cover

How to fill form, understand and answer questions about yourself. How to speak about your daily activities. How to speak about your health.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1) Improve basic reading and writing 2) Improve spoken vocabulary 3) Become more independent learners

How will I know I'm making progress?

At the start of the course you will be given a series of tasks to find out what level you are at and what you need to learn. This will be used to make sure that we plan a good course for you and your classmates. You will be given regular feedback on what you are doing well and what you need to work on. You will be given homework which will be corrected for you.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Please bring a pen, a pencil and paper to the class as well as a folder to keep any worksheets in.

Reading and information sources

English is all around you. If you use every opportunity to practice your English you will improve faster. Try to read and understand all the words around you. You might want to join the library and use their books regularly.

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2016
