Hula hooping and circus skills
Over the duration of the course you'll learn to spin the hoop all over the body, starting with the waist and hands. You'll learn a range of tricks, receive advice on linking them together and ways of moving freely with your hoop. You'll be taught complementary circus skills to supplement your learning.

This course is an in depth study of hula hooping and complementary circus skills. You will learn a range of hooping tricks and techniques, dance styles and movement approaches.
Who is the course for?
No prior experience is required. You will need to be comfortable with light exercise and being on your feet for a sustained period.
What topics will this course cover
Hula hooping on the waist and hands: starting with the basics you'll learn to spin the hoop on the body around the waist and move it around the body using your hands. You'll learn a range of ways of lifting and returning your hoop from and to the body. You'll also learn to hoop at the chest, knees and elbows. You'll learn tricks led by the hands such as weaves, isolations and body rolls. In addition we will study wider circus skills: you'll be taught basic three ball juggling and you'll learn how to spin a plate, with the opportunity to develop tricks from these two skills. You will also have the chance to learn a number of other skills, including balancing and prop manipulation.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
1) Spin hula hoops on the waist and hands 2) Demostrate a number of tricks with a hula hoop 3) Juggle 2 or 3 balls 4) Spin a plate on a stick 5) Have a better level of coordination, fitness and movement
How will I know I'm making progress?
Formally, through the use of learning plans; in mid and end of course reviews. Through 1 - 1 contact time during each session.
What else do I need to know, do or bring?
Just wear comfortable clothes suitable for light exercise. You may also wish to bring a notepad and pen or a video camera to record recaps.

Any web source on hula hooping or circus skills, but neither is essential.
What could the course lead to?
An intermediate hooping course, further study with this tutor or elsewhere.
