Building Confidence through Walking and Exploring the Landscape (Summer)
The planning and mapping of 11 walks which are then undertaken and led by the learners. The course will span over 11 sessions, commencing with an introduction to map reading and planning a route, with a short walk on the first session. Further sessions will be split into planning and then walking the route. The course will start from pick up points in Banwell, Weston-super-Mare, Worle, Congresbury, Yatton and Clevedon where the planning takes place. The group will then be taken to the start of the walk and the walks will be circular from there. The group will have the opportunity to use many of the footpaths in the surrounding area including the West Mendip Way. The paths are on the edge of the Mendips so include inclines, declines, wooded areas, fields with livestock, footpaths, bridleways and lanes.

This is a targeted course aimed at students who are experiencing social isolation and/or who have mental health issues. For further information please contact Phil Lyons on 0117 9166511. Students will be invited to contribute on a voluntary basis towards the cost of materials. NB First session starts at 9.45am for induction and orientation.

What topics will this course cover
The group will have the opportunity to use many of the footpaths in the surrounding area including the West Mendip Way. The paths are on the edge of the Mendips so include inclines, declines, wooded areas, fields with livestock, footpaths, bridleways and lanes. Students will learn how to read a map and have a chance to find out more about the local landscape. It will suit students who lack self-confidence and have low self-esteem who wish to work in a group and benefit from an environment where support within the team is high, as well as those who wish to learn more about the rural environment by experiencing walking within the countryside or those who simply wish to increase their levels of fitness by regular walking, which can then be continued after the course.
What will it be like?
WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
Understand the principles behind basic map reading Follow a walking route from a map Orientate themselves using a map and compass Feel some confidence in their ability to achieve given tasks
