Gaining Confidence through Bushcraft (Summer)

This creative outdoor course is designed for people of any ability. Through activities such as hand-crafts, making fire, cooking over the fire or making shelter you’ll have the chance to gain some confidence and enjoy the world around you.

Additional information about this course

Enrolment on all courses is via Reception Office, Carlton Centre, Carlton Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1UA, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Tel: 01934 426442. First session at 9.30 am at Carlton Centre. No session on 1 June. Students will be invited to contribute on a voluntary basis towards the cost of materials.

Course aim

To develop confidence through bushcraft and rural skills. To provide an environment and activities that support personal development and therapy.

Who is the course for?

This is a targeted course for students who are registered with the Carlton Centre. For further information please contact Phil Lyons on 0117 9166511. The course is outside in various locations including woods and some walking is required.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Recognise the key elements of bushcraft survival 2. Communicate with confidence in a group of people 3. Perform bushcraft related tasks using various hand tools 4. Demonstrate knowledge and experience of local outdoor places

How will I know I'm making progress?

Progression is on an individual basis and is worked out on a 1:1 level. Challenges are set throughout the course and group work encourages personal growth. Feedback relates specifically to the individual journey.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Clothing suitable for a day outdoors. Packed lunch where required. This is a targeted course aimed at students who are registered with the Carlton Centre.

Further learning is encouraged to further the experience, but not essential.
