No session on 1.6.17. Students will be invited to contribute to the cost of materials on a voluntary basis.

Course aim

Learn how to make simple silver and copper jewellery from sheet and wire using traditional jewellery making techniques.

Who is the course for?

Suitable for beginners, no previous experience required.

What topics will this course cover

Students will learn how to form copper and silver sheet into simple pendants, form wire and sheet into rings, use hand tools to cut, file, texture, shape, solder and finish their jewellery. More experienced students will develop their soldering, texturing and forming skills through additional tutor led projects.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Name and select a range of appropriate tools and equipment, and use them safely. Apply their own design ideas. Demonstrate the techniques and processes taught. Complete an original piece of jewellery.

How will I know I'm making progress?

The tutor will provide feedback and guidance.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Please wear shoes that fully cover your feet. It would be useful to bring along a sketchbook, notebook and an apron. Students will be invited to contribute on a voluntary basis towards the cost of materials.

Reading and information sources

It might be useful to look for jewellery that you like and start thinking of simple outlines and shapes that could become your first project.

What could the course lead to?

Completion of this course would enable students to pursue a further term or two of this course, broadening and developing additonal skills before progressing onto the ''Silver & Copper Jewellery Course - Improvers", ''Project-based Silver & Copper Jewellery Course" or a similar level course by another provider.
