Course aim

To develop each learner’s spoken and written French through interactive and enjoyable activities To assist students to listen to and understand French conversation, stories poems etc. read aloud To develop a knowledge of current French life and thinking

Who is the course for?

All students who wish to improve and develop their knowledge of the French language both spoken and written

What topics will this course cover

Spontaneous conversation (news, word games, discussion, comparisons) Reading re. French life, places to visit, customs, festivals, recipes, opinions of French people….. Individual written essays – various topics Vocabulary and grammar building exercises (use of puzzles and pictures) Verb tenses Dictation and grammar written exercises Stories, songs, fables, jokes in French Creation of rôle play

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Initiate and participate in conversation in French with increased confidence (Speak French) Read aloud in French with greater clarity and confidence (Read French) Write in French using appropriate tenses and interesting vocabulary (Write French) Create rôle play with partner / solve vocabulary building games (Speak and Write) Understand spoken French spoken at native speed and answer related questions (Listen)

How will I know I'm making progress?

The tutor will comment upon achievement with suggestions for improvement. Written work will be corrected with suggestions for further practice to reinforce learning, Group work/general discussion will reveal both progress and any shortcomings in achievement. The tutor will assist with achieving personal goals.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

A good dictionary e.g. Collins A4 loose leaf folder and plastic wallets to hold handouts file paper, pens Verb tables (optional)

Reading and information sources

Reading of French magazines or newspapers helpful. Viewing French films or T.V. broadcasts also desirable

What could the course lead to?

Further French courses with W.E.A. or other adult education provider. Reading of French magazines or newspapers helpful. Viewing French films or T.V. broadcasts also desirable
