A friendly, informal and creative class. Using a different subject each week we will experiment with a range of watercolour techniques to achieve exciting effects within a painting. The emphasis will be on a wet into wet style of painting.

Course aim

To increase student's ability, enjoyment and confidence in water colour painting.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

Sunflowers, Autumn produce, seedheads, hedgehogs or harvest mice, a coastal scene, owls, on the moor, butterflies, bees & dragonflies

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

Demonstrate effective colour mixing in my work. Demonstrate effective tonal values in my work. Demonstrate effective use of wet into wet technique. Demonstrate how to achieve exciting effects using glycerine, cling film, or salt.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Each week there will be individual verbal feedback on the students progress and the painting they are working on, as well as any work they complete at home and bring in for discussion.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Watercolour paints. Range of watercolour brushes. Watercolour paper (140lb). Rigid board to stick paper to. Masking tape for sticking down paper. Pot for water. Tutor will provide advice on colours/makes of paint and brushes.

What could the course lead to?

Some students have had work framed and exhibited locally. Some have gone on to study a certified art course. Many return year after year as there is always something new to learn and experiment with in watercolour.
