An introduction to everyday mindfulness

Students will be receive an overview of the concept of mindfulness, be introduced to mindfulness exercises, have the opportunity to practice them and evaluate the effectiveness of the exercises on their own stress levels and mental health. Students will be encouraged to adapt the exercises to create a toolkit of bespoke mindfulness skills that they can use each day.

Course aim

To identify and create bespoke mindfulness skills that students can use to reduce everyday stress and enhance their mental wellbeing.

• An overview of mindfulness • The benefits of everyday mindfulness on stress levels and mental wellbeing • Exploration of mindfulness concepts and practices • Practice of mindfulness exercises • Critical analysis of mindfulness exercises through group discussion • Adaptation of mindfulness exercises to meet student’s own personal needs

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1)Describe mindfulness and the benefits it has on stress levels and mental health. 2)Use mindfulness concepts and practices to reduce stress levels and enhance their mental wellbeing. 3)Critically analyse mindfulness exercises. 4)Adapt mindfulness exercises to meet their own personal needs.

How will I know I'm making progress?

Each student will complete a learning journal that will be reviewed by the tutor and feedback given. Sessions will encourage peer feedback.

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

Students are encouraged to bring a pen to sessions but all other materials will be provided.

Reading and information sources

No prior reading or preparation is needed.

What could the course lead to?

All students will leave the course with a set of bespoke mindfulness skills that they can use each day to reduce stress levels and improve their mental wellbeing. Some students will gain confidence and improved self-esteem. Some students may progress onto a further WEA course or a course at a Further Education College.
