Learners on this course will learn how to ask for addition and subtraction sums in different ways, language for position, size, weight, capacity, shape names and properties, language for time and how to use a basic calculator.

Course aim

This course is designed for ESOL learners to introduce and practice the language of mathematics.

Who is the course for?

Students should be able to speak and understand basic English.

What topics will this course cover

- How to ask for addition and subtraction sums in different ways. - How to describe position, size, weight. - Properties and names of shapes. - Language for time and the calendar.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

- Interpret +, - and = in practical situations for solving problems. - Describe length, width,height and use direct comparisons for length, width and height of items. - Describe weight and use direct comparisons for the weight of items. - Describe capacity and use direct comparisons for the capacity of items. - Relate familiar events to times of the day, days of the week and seasons of the year. - Recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes. - Understand everyday positional vocabulary.
