An Introduction to British Sign Language & Makaton

To gain skills to sign a basic conversation to cover the alphabet, sign your name and greet people, sign your family, and recognize the difference between people symbols and family,

Course aim

To support and use makaton sign language and symbols for any one who works with, or has family with, speech impairment learning difficulties; autism, down syndrome.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

Be able to sign your family, what pets you have or like, to sign about the weather with colour and clothes, be able to sign different places you visit around town, sign what food and drink you like, Signs will be with makaton symbols. Sign the alphabet with alphabet song to be able to sign your name and greet people, with alphabet dominoes

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

To recognise the alphabet to sign name Recognize different family signs To sign different pets To everyday foods and drinks Sign the weather with colours School and jobs

How will I know I'm making progress?

I will sign 1 to 1 with learners also do recap quiz, so they can test them selves how much they have remembered

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

no but can bring sign books

Reading and information sources

no but you can read the sign language books or look on line to see different signs and symbols

What could the course lead to?

build up to a full conversation, further courses at broader or higher levels, this course will also be of benefit to those who work with, or are working towards, working with children. Can do the Level 1 British Sign Language
